Beijing's future giant airport against the sky's congestion

In 2040, 16.2 million flights will be operated each year, an increase of 53 compared to the flight programs of 2017, according to the projections of Eurocontrol report, but Beijing responds with the construction of its super airport .

In the rural suburbs of Beijing, a construction site of 8,000 workers stretches out as far as the eye can see: China is building a new giant airport with a futuristic design, which should become one of the busiest in the world, and at its core design, thanks to the teams at ADP Ingénierie.

Designed to relieve pressure on the other capital's near-saturated international airport, it will open to the public in June 2019, says Li Jianhua, the project's executive director in the Beijing Urban Construction Group.

With a total cost of 63.9 billion yuan (8 billion euros), the new airport will require a total of some 200,000 tons of steel, the same amount as for the Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning, said Li Jianhua.

This new "Daxing International Airport" imagined by ADP Ingénierie and Zaha Hadid should be running at full speed in 2025 and in view of the congestion of our skies. It will then have eight operational runways and will be able to accommodate 72 million passengers a year. And this is only a first example of a mega site that will serve to offer a reprieve to this congestion.

In Europe, 111 airports have planned to increase their capacity by 16%, but travelers will still face one of the other consequences of this scenario: the recurring flight delays. In the summer of 2016, they were about twelve minutes late. They will be more than 20 minutes in 2040. Furthermore, the number of flights delayed between one and two hours will be multiplied by 7. In summer 2040, the number of airports reaching the maximum capacity will increase from six to sixteen, like the current situation in London-Heathrow.
